Work experience

Self-Employed Artist and Therapist (practitioner/instructor of both) between 1983 and 2011 , ongoing . . .

On the Arts side, my first commission was given to me when I was 15: I continued to paint and take photographs from then on, (winning a photography prize at school , and a travel scholarship to study arts and crafts in Morocco), In 1979 and 1980 I was invited by Felicitas Vogler (“The Quiet Eye”) to go to Ticino and reorganise her photography archive , leading to changes in my own style of photography.Whilst studying acupuncture I was apprenticed as a restorer of antique oriental rugs and carpets, and worked with them between 1982 and 1986, at times managing the shop/gallery, I have subsequently designed and made my own rugs. As a painter I began to exhibit regularly and professionally from 1990 onwards after moving to Cornwall. (see list below). I developed a short workshop to help people pick up or kick-start their painting practise and have taught this in Cornwall and in Spain, as well as giving private tuition. My first qualification in therapeutics enabled me to start a practice of Medical Remedial Massage in Oxford, (co-founding the Oxford Massage Group 1986),then in Penzance, quickly followed by Acupuncture and then Zero Balancing. I became a teacher in the latter as well as a founder of the professional body (ZBA.UK), overseeing studies in UK/Europe. I have taught over 150 workshops at all levels of the skill, and introduced the skills into France,Belgium, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal. I have spoken at conferences in Europe, (Ricci Institute,Paris/Oriental Foundation,Lisbon/Nursing College,Zaragoza/DOMO,Barcelona), and USA, (Boston 1989 & 2002), and in 2000 I co-organised the London International ZB Conference, “Worlds Within Worlds” . I have also assisted and translated for Fritz Smith the founder of the Zero Balancing method, have video documented his advanced seminars, and co-trained new teachers , (1995/6 , 2003/4, and 2011-13) as part of an international teacher training program. 2001/2003 Visitng Instructor Upledger Institute , Granada, Spain. I continue to teach abroad as a visiting tutor, and supervisor to newer teachers. I launched the Ambassadors of Touch apprentice program 2010 and have initiated an informal research group on the Nature of Wellbeing (and how to measure it) in 2011

Artist Education & Training

Largely self-taught as an artist, I attended a few experimental evening classes at the Central School of Art in London (1978/9), including a class with Cecil Collins (1983). Subsequently I did a term of painting theory with Mike Chalwin and terracotta sculpture with Teresa Gillder, both at Penzance Art School 1992. I also did two short courses with Robin Child in Wiltshire (1997/8). My informal mentor in Cornwall was John Miller with whom I shared studio space for a while. As a performer I studied with Elkan Ogunde as part of his variety band 78/79, did a full-bodied voice workshop with Frankie Armstrong/Darien Pritchard, several singing workshops with Ida Keralova, an actors workshop with David Shaw (White), Ballet Rambert workshop (Oxford), and several shamanic trainings. Gaps in professional/study history

Between A level and starting university I travelled to Africa overland for a year (1975) – I then completed 1 year of a BA Joint Honours degree in Comparative Law and Social Anthroplogy at SOAS,London , during which time I was granted a trravel bursary to go to Ghana and observe they customary courts in action (1975/76) – After leaving early in the second year, I worked in various menial and admin jobs, then became reservations clerk/promoted to manager, of Afro Asian Travel Centre in London/Paris (1976/1978). For the next four years (1978 /1982 ), I alternated traveliing abroad and working part time and being an artist ( including writing a novel later destroyed), until my acceptance on the acupuncture training course which I graduated from in 1985. Since when I have been in continuous self-employment, with accounts going back to 1983 when I began practice supported by the new Enterprise Allowance scheme..
